In the News: Hunger Around the World

In these turbulent times, people around the world are experiencing great extremes in food security (the ability to obtain food at all times). In the US, the recent signing of the US Global Food Security Act of 2016 is a domestic step in addressing these issues, but the problems are worldwide and severe.

In some countries, there is such an abundance of food that enormous food waste has become a serious problem. In other parts of the world, climate issues, political policies, war, migration, and economic hardship are converging to create food shortages and overall lack of access to food, resulting in hunger, malnutrition and stunting. And in some Western countries, such as the US, food abundance, food waste, and hunger all co-exist.

Here are some countries where hunger - and problems related to hunger - are especially challenging:

20 Training Kitchens Cultivating Skills Around the World

At 11 million jobs and counting, the food service industry is one of the fastest-growing economic sectors worldwide. With this kind of growth, who's training the future employees?

This article highlights 20 interesting training kitchens around the world. From the first female-run cookery school in Palestine, to a Toronto kitchen looking to reduce social isolation through food, these kitchens contribute to their local communities, and provide career training skills to underserved populations such as the differently abled, unemployed, homeless, and formerly incarcerated.

Can a Food Sharing App Reduce Food Waste in Spain?

Approximately 8 million tons of food are wasted in Spain each year — making it the seventh highest food waster in the EU.

Now, a new mobile app in Spain attempts to address this issue by allowing users to exchange both raw and cooked food items for free. Will it work?

A New Chapter for Saffron

Saffron's mystique and purported health benefits are legendary - but like many valuable products, it's been subject to high-risk trade and market upheaval.

Recently, scientists and saffron experts banded together to form a movement called "Saffronomics." Here's why they did it - and what they're hoping will change in the saffron trade around the world.
"The world throws away a third of everything it produces, and people are not aware that this waste has a huge impact on the world’s nutrition, and on the availability and the prices of products in other countries."
